1. b3 e5 2. Bb2 d6 3. e4 Nf6 4. Nc3 Be6 5. Nf3 Be7 6. d4 Bg4 7. dxe5 Nfd7? gives up a pawn for no compensation 8. exd6 Bxd6 9. Be2 O-O 10. O-O Bxf3 11. Bxf3 Qh4 12. g3 Qh6 13. e5 opening up the h1-a8 diagonal 13... Nxe5 14. Bxb7 Nbd7 15. Bxa8 Rxa8 16. Nb5 Qh3 17. f3 Bc5+ 18. Bd4 Be7 here I should have started simplifying by swapping off and consolidating the advantage of the exchange. But instead, I steadily get myself into both a pickle and time trouble. 19. Qe2 Ng6 20. Rad1 c5 21. Bb2 a6 22. Nc7 Ra7 23. Nd5 Bd6 24. c4 Nde5 25. Bxe5? here I missed the move 25. Nf4 probably as I was so pleased to have got my knight to the d5 outpost, missing 25... Nxf4 26. gxf4 Ng6 27. Rxd6 which wins for White. Frustratingly, I saw it over the board but over-complicated it in my mind, and elected instead for the safer (I thought) f4... with unfortunate consequences 25... Bxe5 26. f4 Bd6 27. Rde1 h5 28. Qg2 less than 5 minutes left for White at this stage, while Black has 20-odd... so I decide to trade Queens... 28... Qf5 29. Qe4 Qh3 30. Re3 Qg4 31. f5 Qxe4 32. Rxe4 Ne5 33. f6 g6 34. Re3 Kh7 35. Kg2 a5 36. a4 creates a weakness in the White pawn chain that I am made to regret 36... Rb7 37. h4 Kh6 38. Ne7 played hoping for BxN PxB RxP Rf6... 38... Ng4 39. Ng8+ Fritz dislikes this move intensely, feeling it gives away all advantage. However with only a minute or so on the clock, I needed to start chasing that King.. 39... Kh7 40. Re8 Rxb3 41. Rf3 Rb2+ 42. Kg1 Ra2 43. Rb3 Rxa4 Not the time to start taking pawns, and allows White's rook through to the 7th rank 44. Rb7 Ne5 45. Nh6! I am pleased with having seen this one with just seconds left - the only move that keeps my advantage. If KxN Rh8 mate 45... Rxc4 46. Rxf7+ Nxf7 47. Nxf7 Black will eventually run out of checks, and be forced to play g5, with loss of the d6 Bishop. However, the move played allows the finish 47... Bxg3 48. Rh8# and there are still a few seconds left on my clock.... 1-0 [Patrick Moss]
