Div 1 Oxford League, Cowley 1 vs. Witney 1, 10th Jan 2011

1. e4 e5 2. d4 exd4 3. c3 c5 4. cxd4 cxd4 5. Nf3 Nc6 6. Nxd4 Now it is lke a Scotch opening but with the Queen bishop pawns missing. It is not clear who this favours. White will not get doubled isolated c pawns in some lines and black has Qa5 or b6 available but d6 may be weak. 6... Nf6 Here Kasparov's Nxc6 and e5 plan will not work because of Qa5 ch 7. Nc3 Bb4 8. Qd3 Strangely I suddenly thought he might play this dubious move a couple of seconds before he did it - did I read some body language here 8... d5 I thought this would be sharper but it probably releases the tension and Castles should be preferred. 9. exd5 Qxd5 10. Nxc6 Qxc6 11. Bd2 Too passive 11... O-O-/+ 12. Qc4? Re8+ 13. Be3 Nd5 14. Qxc6 bxc6 15. Kd2 Trying to hold onto material equality but the king is now cruelly exposed to the crossfire of the 2 bishops and 2 rooks. 15... Bf5 16. Rc1 Rad8 17. Ke2 Bg4+ 18. Ke1 18. f3 Nxe3 19. fxg4 Nd1+ 20. Kf3 Re3+ 21. Kf4 Rd4+ 22. Kf5 Now all of black's pieces are in whites half of the board. 22... Be7 Is One way to force mate 18... Nxc3 If pawn takes knight , Bishop takes pawn check forces mate. 0-1 [Mark Hannon]
