I hadn't been to a chess
congress for several years and noted Witney was
coming up so thought I'd give it a try. This
congress is local to me and is organised by Mike
"Mr 4NCL" Truran so was sure it would be well
run. I would be accompanied by fellow Banbury
player Dan Rowan who is a regular at these
weekend events.
The congress was held at
Cokethorpe School, a private school located just
south of Witney. It's certainly a lovely
location with plenty of parking and good signage
to find the playing hall. The hall is very new
and it provided excellent conditions to play
chess. Hacketts provided a varied array of
refreshments, which were frequently required
given it's a 2-day affair. I managed to take a
few photos while there as my words don't really
do the venue justice.
And so on to the chess! There
were 4 sections: Open, U180, U145 and U120. All
were keenly contested although there could have
been a few more entrants in the Open. In fact,
there were so few that all entrants in this
section got a cash prize much to Mike's
embarrassment and very probably annoyance! The
others sections I'm pleased to announce were
well supported.
So to finish, thanks must be
given to all the organisers and arbiters for
providing such a great weekend's chess. Final
thanks must go to my better half for allowing my
attendance. I'm sure I will have to do many
weekends of back-breaking DIY in recompense,
especially as I want to attend the Kidlington
congress in Feb.
